Ronald Johnson was born in Northallerton and worked as a clerk at County Hall. He was married to Lena and lived in Greenhowsyke Lane Northallerton.

When war delared he joined the Royal Marines and was posted to Trincomalee in Ceylon. He joined HMS Highflyer, which was a shore base known as a "concrete frigate". On the 7th June 1945 he died on board HMS Highflyer.

Ronald Johnson is buried in a Commonwealth War Grave at Trincomalee in Ceylon, Plot 1, Row A, Grave 3. He is commemorated on the Northallerton War Memorial, the All Saints Parish Church Memorial and the NALGO Memorial in County Hall.
