Edwin was born in Brompton and his parents were called Rose and the Late Thomas Atkinson.

Edwin was living in Brompton when he joined the Yorkshire Regiment, at Northallerton, on 2nd December 1915. He was subsequently posted to the 11th Battalion which was based at Rugeley, on Cannock Chase, before being posted to the 10th Battalion in France.

He was wounded and taken to one of the three hospitals which had been established on the French coast at Abbeville. His wounds were severe and one of his legs had to be amputated. Sasly, he never recovered and remained in hospital at Abbeville, where he died of his wounds at the age of 26.
