John Hartley was born in Goathland, before moving to Northallerton, where he lived at 19 Gladstone Street, Northallerton. He had been employed by the North Eastern Railway as a temporary cleaner for 18 months before he enlisted.

He was captured during the German March Offensive in March 1918 and died in a German hospital, aged 20, the following New Year's Eve.
