Herbert Jackson was born in Scarborough and was the son of the Late Mr Enterby Jackson, a well-known musician. He was married and lived at 2 Arncliffe Terrace in Northallerton.
Before he joined the Army he worked as the bookstall assistant for Messrs Smith & Son at the Northallerton Railway Station (later to become WH Smith's). He first joined the firm in Scarborough and worked at Northallerton for 13 years, after which time he was effectively running the bookstall.
Herbert joined up in September 1917 and he served in the Motor Transport Service of the Army Service Corps in the Mechanical Transport School of Instruction. He died in Hospital, in France, at the age of 42 and it is therefore presumed that he died as a result of illness or an accident whilst on active duty.
