Charles was born in Boroughbridge and was the son of Mr W Longstaff of North Arch Tanneries, Northallerton. Before the War he was employed at J. Walker's Tannery, close to his home.

He joined the Army, in Northallerton, in 1916, but had only been in France for about 8 months when he was killed at the age of 20. He died during the Allies' final advance to Victory only a few weeks before the signing of the Armistice which ended the War.
