John was born in Osmotherley and his parents were called John and Mary Maclean. They lived on Brookside Terrace, Brompton.
He was killed, aged 23, during the final Allied advance of the War, only a month before the Armistice was signed. His Battalion was one of those advancing towards the important town of Douai, which had been the main German railhead and concentration centre behind their lines in the Arras sector throughout the War.
