Private Raper was born at Leeming Bar and his parents were called Jane and Thomas Raper. He enlisted, in Northallerton, on 18th February 1916, though at the time he was living in East Harlsey.

He died of wounds, in hospital at Etaples, a large British Base near the French coast, aged 19.
