Private Simpson was born in Eppleby in Yorkshire and enlisted in Northallerton, though he was living in Brompton at the time at No.2 Primrose Terrace, Brompton. His parents were called George and Elizabeth Simpson.

He died of wounds received on 23rd April 1917, the day after the 4th Yorkshire's abortive attack near Wancourt during the Battle of Arras. After being wounded he was taken to a casualty clearing station behind the lines. The cemetery in which he was laid to rest grew up alongside the CCS to receive the remains of those, like Raylton, who succumbed to their wounds.
