Richard was born in the village of Maunby, just outside Northallerton. He lived in Cleminson's Yard, Northallerton and before the War he worked for Mr D Oakley, a well-known local builder. He was married, with a daughter called May.

He had formerly served as a sapper with the Royal Engineers (No. 213243) but was killed serving with the 10th DCLI. It is not certain whether this was a permanent move or a temporary attachment, but at the time the 10th DCLI were serving as the pioneer battalion for the 66th (East Lancashire) Division.
