Colour Sergeant Instructor Sturgess was born in Jamaica in the West Indies. His home address was in Northallerton but he enlisted in the Yorkshire Regiment in Sheffield.

He died whilst on garrison duty with the 1st Yorkshire Regiment in India. The 1st Battalion spent the entire War in India. It is often forgotten that Britain still had to police its Empire while it fought the War and that men like Frederick Sturgess died in the service of their Country a long way from the trenchlines in France and Belgium.
