George was the son of Richard and Mary Tweddle of Oak Tree Yard, Northallerton and his father was a labourer. He was baptised in Northallerton on 19th January 1894.

Before he joined the Army he worked for Mr Hay, a Miller, at North End, Northallerton.

He originally enlisted into the Yorkshire Regiment (No. 3837) before being posted to the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed trying to stem the tide of the German 1918 Spring Offensive.
