Thomas was born in Shirebrook, Derbyshire and was the second son of Mr & Mrs R Walburn of L'Espec Street, Northallerton. His father ran a bootmakers business in Zetland Street and his elder brother was Herbert Walburn who was also destined not to survive the War and whose name also appears on the Northallerton Memorial.

Before he joined up he had worked as a salesman for the Meadow Butter Company of Newcastle before becoming a traveller for Lewis & Coopers in Northallerton and the Star Tea Company.

He joined the Army, at Chesterfield, in August 1915 and was married the following Christmas. He was killed, presumably by German counter battery fire, at the height of the Battle of The Somme, aged 28.
