Pte. S.J. Weighell

FIRST NAMES: Sidney James

UNIT: 4th Yorkshire Regiment

NUMBER: 200943

STATUS: Killed in Action

DATE OF DEATH: 23rd April 1917

CEMETERY OR MEMORIAL: The Arras Memorial, France

AGE: Unknown

Sidney was the son of Sarah and the late John Weighell and they lived at Cusworth Cottages in Brompton.

He was killed during the 4th Yorkshire's abortive attack during the battle of Arras, when the British troops on either side of them could not penetrate the German defences as well as they had, leaving them open to counter-attack on three sides. They were forced to make a fighting withdrawl from the positions they had captured until by the end of the day they were back in the very same trenches from which they had started. Sidney Weighell, however, was not among them and, like all the local men who perished on this day, his body was never identified and he is commemorated on the huge Memorial to The Missing at Arras.
