Pte. E. Wright

FIRST NAMES: Edwin

UNIT: 10th Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry

NUMBER:34798

STATUS: Killed in Action

DATE OF DEATH: 25th September 1916

CEMETERY OR MEMORIAL: The Thiepval Memorial

AGE: Unknown

Edwin was born in Masham and enlisted at Northallerton in the Yorkshire Regiment. His number was previously 5384.

He was killed on The Somme in the same attack by the 10th KOYLI as Joseph Wells, from Romanby. The Battalion could not penetrate the German barbed wire in front of Gird Trench, near Gueudecourt and had to take shelter in shellholes until darkness fell, when the remnants were able to crawl back to their front line trenches. Neither Edwin nor Joseph were ever seen again and they are both commemorated on the massive Thiepval Memorial to The Missing, which carries the names of all those who died in the 1916 Battles of The Somme and who have no known grave.
