The Memorials

Northallerton
Brompton

The Northallerton Memorial was unveiled on 6th August 1921. It is composed of a Celtic cross on top of an octagonal base. Five of the base faces contain the names of those who fell in the First World War and the remaining three list those who were killed in the Second World War. On the main face there is also a dedication in memory of No.6 (Canadian) Bomber Group, who operated from several airfields in the Northallerton area in WW2.

The WW1 names are listed formally according to rank, though there are a couple of exceptions where close family members of different ranks are listed together.

A separate dedication has also been included in memory of L.Cpl Ben Hyde who was killed in Iraq in 2003.

Romanby

The Romanby memorial was unveiled on 19th March 1927 and takes the form of a clock tower set in an area of gardens which were donated to the public by a Mr. Todd, of Romanby.

The front of the memorial contains a general dedication panel with further panels listing the names of those killed in WW2. Two side panels contain the list of those killed in WW1 and are listed in alphabetical order with no distinctions according to rank.

The Brompton Memorial was unveiled on 20th March 1921 and takes the form of a lych gate at the entrance to St. Thomas' Church.

Inside the gate are panels listing those killed in WW1, with smaller panels having been added later to commemorate those killed in WW2. The WW1 names appear to be random, not being in alphabetical or rank order, but they are, in fact, listed according to the dates they died. The WW2 names are listed alphabetically.
